This website has been online for 4 years. I’ve written 3,100-plus articles. My daily average in writing is between 2 to 3 articles.
I often get asked, “How do you manage to write 2 to 3 articles a day?”
The technique is simple. I write what I like. I write what I only care about. I write what I know.
In hindsight we ask, “Is there anything special with that answer, Jaycee?”
Sometimes it looks like when you do something that not so many can do with consistency, some people are inclined into thinking that the only way to get it done is by means of a complicated, outrageous, bizarre, and uncanny process.
Be it about writing or speaking, you write and speak about things that you know that you want others to know. There are many blogs out there that will tell you that the secret to a successful blog is to write about things that your audience would love to read. That ain’t a bad idea, but it’s not the best advice that could help you achieve consistency in writing.
When you write an article or give a talk, make sure that your theme is rooted to your core belief, to what you know inside and out, and to what you can write and talk about even in your sleep.
Your goal is to attract people who can resonate with your belief system and topics. You are the leader. You are the influencer. You’re looking for followers. You’re looking for students.
Not because 90 percent of the people around you are doing ballroom dancing each week, it doesn’t mean you have no choice but to write about ballroom dancing. C’mon man! You failed your ROTC in college because your hands and feet were not well-coordinated and now you kind of expect people to give you a warm round of applause with your article about tango and cha-cha? Wow. Just wow.
Don’t look for what’s hot. Stick to the topic that you really know well, that when you write or speak about it, it’s as though it’s the first time the world will hear about it, even if you’ve talked and written about it for a countless number of times already.
There will be times when you feel as though you’re the only one who’s excited about your topic. Don’t change course even when you feel that way. There’s nothing wrong with you. You just got the wrong audience. Your room is your room. Ask those uninterested audience if they entered the right function room.
That’s the key to being a consistent writer. You write because you like it whether others like it or not.
